Yukon Gold Potatoes

I have been growing 'Rudolph' potatoes as a main crop for the last 2 seasons. This year however my potatoes developed wireworm infestation which affected 50% of the crop.
Ii am considering changing to 'Yukon Gold'. Are they a main crop?
Will they store ok in sacks for a few months after harvest do you think?
How do I reduce the wireworm problem?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Many thanks

Think Yukon Gold are 2nd Earlies.

I've been hearing very good things of Setanta this year ... good disease and slug resistance although I don't know about wireworm attack.

When (in days of yore) we had wireworm in the veg patch we turned the chickens on there ... they love them and always cleared the ground of wireworms and keel slugs.

I've grown Yukon Gold this year and dove is correct they are 2nd early, they were good but not something worth shouting about. I don't grow maincrop anymore due to keel slugs
  • Thank you both.
Some sites say early others main crop.
Can you store them for any length of time ?
Thought I might try them because they're supposed to have a nice flavour.
    Any other comments?

  • What do you suggest for maincrop in terms of flavour / size ?

    Hi,

I too heard good things about Setanta so tries it, like Yukon Gold no taste so not worth the bother.

The best main crop for has been Sante, only problem is quite hard to source!

    Hope this helps!

No blight or slug damage since I first grew it.
    Hope this helps!

    Hi,
I used to use lots manure and lots of garden compost the potato patch year and was always troubled with blight and keel slug damage.
The worst effected were Desire and Maris Piper, the slugs loved both!
I was speaking to an elderly chap, he said he was not bothered with either complaint and dug out some Desire to show me, perfect size and shape no damage on them.
He said no organic material in the potato patch for two years before planting, and only Growmore or the like for fertilizer.

So I followed what he said and now have not had any problems since.

Ps I know that blight is an air borne disease by once I stopped using manure etc I have not had it even though other plot holders have had it!
