Enriched soil and mulch

Hello everyone,

I have a tonne bag of mulch and a tonne bag of enriched topsoil out in my back garden for 6 months now. They were from a project which I had to abandon. Are they still good? I read that the mulch may be toxic to plants at this stage. They are not covered. And the rain which we have been getting in Cork this autumn has been relentless.

Hi and welcome to the Forum.
I've no idea why anyone would suggest it" may be toxic" It'll be fine, the worst that might happen is you'll have some wind blown weed seed in there now.

  • Thanks, it was about the mulch where I read about it being stored over a long period, it then becomes toxic as it breaks down. Anyway it’s good that I can hold on to them.

So long as not stored me than 2m deep, for over a year,  it's fine . Builders often scrape all the topsoil from a site and stack it somewhere then replace it back onto finished plots.
Sometimes it's left too long and " anaerobic compaction " takes place and it , effectively , become sub soil .
    Yours will be fine

What is the mulch made of? Compost/bark etc?
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
