John Shardlow

I read that Agapanthus should ideally be kept frost free over the winter. But is it ok to keep them in a garage which is dark for most of the time? Or I could put them in the house in front of patio doors to keep them in the light.
Comments appreciated!

Hi @John147. Some are hardier than others, so it would help if you could tell us which ones you have, and whereabouts in the country [approximately] you are, as your local climate will also have a bearing on their care  :)

Good morning John and welcome to the forum. Some agapanthus are relatively hardy and can stay outside. I have some deciduous ones that live in pots all year round outside my back door. If yours are the evergreen type then they would benefit from light so the garage may not be the best place for them. You might find some useful information here:

    No probs @John147
@Hostafan1 grows a lot of Agapanthus, of all types. He keeps some in his polytunnel over winter, and might be able to offer more info too  :)

Oops sorry @Fairygirl. Your comment wasn't there when I posted my response to @John147 so I sounded a bit like 'Little Sir Echo'.

No need to apologise. At least we agreed - otherwise I'd have looked a right t**t :D

As a general rule of thumb, deciduous are much hardier than evergreens.
I bring evergreen varieties into an unheated polytunnel for the winter, but when I lived in my last house ( Hampshire ) they lived outside and they just lost their leaves, but survived ok
