Growing a Clematis through something

When you grow a Clematis through something, how far away do you plant it? as I assume you put it so far away and train/ lean towards the intended tree etc.

Yes - give it a bit of room - and it will depend on both the clematis and the tree/shrub you're using.
About a foot to eighteen inches is the norm, but if there's a larger tree canopy you may want to have it out nearer the edge of that, especially if the ground is drier and it's a clem which needs good moisture.
Prepping the ground well is necessary too, so that it gets a good start.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
