Acer

I have a self set Acer. It's about 5 years old and never grown more than 6 inches. Does anyone know if it will progress?

  • That is weird.
    Is it in a pot?
It should grow far more than 6" in 5 years.
Are you sure it is an Acer.
    Can you post a pic?

First post....A year old and 6" tall is one thing.
    2nd Post.....Now 5 years old and 6" tall......that is weird.
    Confused!

  • Yes its been in a pot since I dug it up from underneath its parent tree.
  • Thanks for pic.

It may have had a shock when you dug it up.
    Buds look perfectly OK.
Looks fine for 1 year old.
Next year it should put on more growth.

If 5 years old...then not a clue why it is so slow.

  • Thankyou. I'll just have to be patient. At least I didn't pay for it!

I think it's overpotted. Any new roots it's making will be at the mercy of the huge amount of soil round them. I'd put that in a much smaller pot- just big enough to contain the rootball, and move it up a size each time it fills the pot.
Just use a soil based compost, or garden soil if it's suitable, and keep it off the ground so that it can drain off excess water, and in a bit of shade.
That pot is big enough for an acer of 6 or 7 years old at least.

How old is it? I could never quite make out from the posts.
