I have never found weed suppressing membrane to work, the weeds will grow through most of them (and there will still be a few lurkers no matter how throughly you weeded). As you would be trying to fit it around already planted trees, unless they are skinny whips, in which case you could cut a cross and carefully lift it over - tricky, but doable with some help - you would have to slit the membrane at the back to fit it around each one which would compromise it’s effectiveness, which is dubious in the first place.
If you used compost instead of mulch, it could be gently brushed back and the odd bit of compost on the lawn will do it no harm. You could use a border edging to contain it as well. If looks aren’t an issue, try the cheap corrugated plastic on a roll.
