Overwintering dahlia tubers

I don't normally lift dahlia tubers but the other half has created a great love with some new tubers that was planted this year and her constant nagging has got me lifting them. I was under the impression that they were lifted dried then wrapped in newspaper and stored in the shed, but everywhere I've looked says they need to be stored in compost. Is newspaper no longer used

Newspaper is fine in a frost free cellar.  I pack mine in compost in buckets under the greenhouse bench. I find it stops them drying out as much.

I'm only asking as I don't drive and getting a large bag of compost home is difficult.
