I have just moved in to a new property and ivy has taken the garden over, how can I get rid of it so that I can plant some flower beds

Cheers Philippa, unfortunately the main stems seem to originate the other side of my fence in what seems to be a walkway, I will check and if possible will just try to cut it right back, I will consider incorporating in some way once under control. thanks for tips
