Japanese knotweed

Hi.We bought a house and moved in in February. From around April/May there were weeds appearing on our lawn which I regularly picked by hand.Last night I came across some blog online about Japanese Knotweed and I swear it looks exactly like the weed I've been picking all summer.Unfortunately they've now all gone but I have managed to dig out the roots and was wondering if anybody will be able to confirm it from photos of the roots.Any help would be appreciated as I'm now really worried.Checked our paper work from building surveyor and there's no mention of that. Can somebody please help what to do now ? I'm in tears ....

They don't look like Japanese Knotweed roots. They look more like tree roots.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • Thank you for your reply...I'm really worried .Unfortunately I am not able to take a photo of those weeds from our lawn as it all died out but it looked so much like asparagus, growing in bunches apart from each other....Do you think I should book a specialist, worried as if it is Japanese knotweed it has been missed by our surveyor and I believe treating is time consuming and very expensive ...
  • It’s not Japanese Knotweed. 😊. I would put money on it.

What trees have you got in or around your garden?

Or has a tree been felled in the area in the past couple of years?

Those are tree roots and suckers.

Jkw doesn't look like asparagus but mares tail does. I agree that they look like tree roots. Is there a tree nearby with similar leaves? They could be suckers from the tree.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

What trees have you got growing around the place? Those look more like tree root suckers, possibly cherry. Doesn't look at all like JKW.

Google japanese knotweed roots, they look different. I agree with others, this looks like tree roots (living roots with suckers growing out of them).
Regarding your weed in the grass, you said looking like asparagus - try googling horsetail or mare's tail to see if it looks like what you have.

Hopefully that's set your mind at rest @btsimon2.
I'd also agree that it's far more like tree roots - a cherry or similar. They have  roots which are often on, or near, the ground surface  :)
I'd also agree that the weed in your grass is most likely horsetail/mare's tail. That can be addressed next spring  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Yes,there's a cherry tree nearby and woodland on our boundary...Oh no,definately not a horse tail, this one had reddish tiny leaves growing out from the 'asparagus stork...definately like this on the photo
  • And by the way thank you so much for helping me out
