Azaleas - Sun, half sun, shadow

Sandra ASandra A Posts: 139
I have some potted azaleas in a sheltered position that get loads of Sun, they did more or less OK during Summer, not many flowers, but I though they just needed to get a bigger pot (could not do it, removed a kidney and I need to wait to do heavy lifting), but I was told that they need to go to a part of the garden that does not get direct Sun. Any opinions, please? Thank you

They prefer semi to full shade. They'll take some sun if they have plenty of moisture to go with it.
In pots, it would be better to keep them shadier. Even with regular rainfall they can be hard to keep hydrated. They need a soil based medium too, not just compost, if they're staying in pots  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Thank you Fairygirl, just made a few alterations, brought them to a more shady spot, they have enough water to be happy, and did a good mulch! I am curious to see the outcome of these changes. And I just saw that my hydrangea and fuchsia cuttings are doing quite well, can't wait for Spring!

Mine are in dappled to full shade most of the day.  Each of five plants along my driveway off the back garden get at best 30 minutes to 1 hour full sun a day.  They are Encore® Azaleas and this is their second flush of the year.

Oh they are so beautiful!!! And look so healthy!
  • A lot depends on the situation. Just to make you laugh, I have many Azalea indicas that grow here in the full heat of the tropical sun. In England I had mainly Ghent (deciduous) azaleas which also like sun, though not Brazilian I would guess). I think the main difference beteween Azalea and Rhododendron is not scientific, but a question of cultivation. Rhododendron likes woodland shade, Azalea more sunshine.

Everyone likes butterflies. Nobody likes caterpillars.
