Are you looking for something to plant into a container, or is it a border that needs brightening up?

Hi @empa0900 -    can you give us some more info about conditions and the location of the garden - ie roughly whereabouts in the country. Is it for in the ground or pots etc  That helps with advice  :)
There are lots of shrubs, climbers and ground cover etc which are good winter features, and require little to no maintenance. It means you have them for many years too, as opposed to annuals and short lived perennials.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Would you like the plant to stop growing in May...?
There are several plants which can be left to grow without any pruning at all. Spirea, photinia, choisya, acer palmatum, fuschia.
I vote for an acer palmatum. Slow growing beautiful trees with stunning autumn colour.
It will be a birthday present so something that will either be near to bloom or will be able to bloom after May as well.

Preferably in pots as I think having it in the ground would be too much for her. She lives in dorset around salsbury way.

    More for in pots.

Choisya - as @Hexagon suggested- could be a very good choice.
Things like Dianthus are also good - most flower probably a bit later than May, but it can depend where in the country you are etc. They'll grow in pots too.
We would need more info though  :)

Ah - our posts crossed  :)
Hexagon's suggestion sounds good. There are lots of roses which will grow in pots too  -I'm sure someone could recommend some.

The only problem with pots is that they often need more attention than plants in the ground. Watering, feeding etc.

    Have a look here
    https://www.gardenersworld.com/plants/10-colourful-winter-pots/

I would choose a look you like and take the picture and list of plants along to a good nursery of garden centre and they should be happy to either make up a similar display for you or sell you a pot along with the appropriate plants and compost so you can do it yourself.

I think 6, 8 and 9 would be very suitable. Some of the plants will last several years.

Any one of those displays should flower at least  until spring in a sheltered spot ... under a porch by a front door or similar.
