Hello, I recently went to hospital for a big heart operation. Home now and doing good. However 6 weeks ago before I went I planted up some hollyhock seeds on pots in my Summerhouse (something to look forward to when I returned) I asked my Hubby to take good care of them. Well he obviously did because they are now 8 inches tall and thriving in 7" diameter pots! We live in mid Wales and do get a lot of rain. Should I plant them out now in a reasonably sheltered area, or wait until the Spring? Any advice will be appreciated. Thank you.

They are perfectly hardy, so I would plant them out now. That way the roots can carry on growing whilst the soil is still warm.
  • ok I see your point, will do as soon as it stops raining!! Many thanks, Hazel.

Hope you are doing as well as the hollyhocks.

Wishing you much good health in the future ... and well done on having picked such a capable ‘Under Gardener’. 👍

  • Thank you Dove, your kind wishes are appreciated. Hubby also thrilled with your compliment! He has only been allowed to do digging, clearing rubbish and chopping trees! He now feels VERY important!

I know nothing about hollyhocks @theconstantgardenerinwales, but I'll echo the others in wishing you well.
Take it easy though - the garden will be fine until next year [with help from the new caretaker ;) ] - the secret is to make sure you are too :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thank you so much, It is just so wonderful to look at it and know I will now be here to tend it for more years than I realised. Roll on the Spring!!
