Bamboo variety

I'm having to purchase bamboo canes every year and can never find thick and long canes in my local garden centres to support beans. Which variety of bamboo can I plant to grow my own canes?

Thanks in advance

I've bought decent canes from Wilko in the past. If I was growing my own, I'd probably go for coppiced Hazel rather than bamboo; bit of a long term project but so is bamboo if you're aiming to harvest usable canes.

It will take years to grow sturdy canes from a plant.

  • I like where you're coming from but I'd go with hazel for growing beans up. Might be worth googling coppicing hazel near to you to see what that turns up.
