Need help: Trachycarpus fortunei.....

Hi,

First post so please be gentle!;)

I recently purchase a 10ft high(4ft high trunk) Trachycarpus fortunei from Homebase (reduced from £210 to £100 in a great offer) and it was in perfect condition apart from 2 Fronds had been damaged either by last years winter or in storage at the store. I've read you should only remove the lowest "fronds" on the trunk and only when they are completely brown and dead but as it has 10 perfectly healthy/strong fronds on the top, the 2 damaged ones look out of place and make it look a mess.

I'm new to all this so sorry for the silly question.....Would it cause any harm to remove the tatty fronds?

I'm also looking to purchase a Palmbooster/fertiliser/feed but wasnt sure if this is really needed and when is the best time to do it?

many thanks for any help..

Removing a couple of damaged fronds ain't gonna hurt it! I've not heard of that fertiliser, but I wouldn't bother adding anything until it's in active growth next spring and summer. That gives you time to research and avoid wasting your money

Thank you Will....Info online is very mixed and sometimes a direct question is the only way to find out the best course of action...appreciate you taking time to reply!

    kind regards
  • I'd agree with WildDB - T. fortunei is one of the best to grow in the UK too - the most hardy.
If you've planted in well prepared ground - as above no extras should be necessary at this time :)
thanks philippa......I dont normally spend so much on a plant(palm) so the replies are really appreciated!;)

    kind regards
