Turning a yew hedge into a tree

Hi, I have two yews that have been trained as a short hedge. I've seen lots of info for how to train as a hedge but is it possible to reverse that and grow a more open tree?

Stop trimming them and they'll become trees.

  • Haven't trimmed then in 2 years and they've just become more bushy...

Give it time.  Their leaders will have been chopped off when they were clipped as hedges.

You could try trimming the sides to encourage more vertical growth.

  • Easy... leave them alone for about 30 years
