Ladybird poppy

Can anyone tell me what I should do with my poppy heads. They are still on the plant at the moment. Should I leave them over winter and then scatter the seeds in spring or should I pinch them off now. I bought the plant this year and it has flowered profusely in the border.  Many thanks for any help on this.

Are they dry and brown and rattling in the pod

  • Most of them are brown and dry but I can’t hear any rattling. Thanks

when they do you can tip them out and sow them where you want them. Poppies do well sowed in Autumn just as the plant is about to do. You should get seedlings there whatever you do now

The seed might have already dispersed.  If so, you'll get seedlings where nature put them.  I would pick one and break it open to see if it's not ready yet or been and gone.

  • Yes that’s a thought. Will do that.
