Shrub or a small tree

I'd like to add a bit of hight and natural screen against the fence and I'm not sure what shrub or small tree would be good for that. It's east side and quite exposed. Something that does well in a big pot would be good too. Any ideas much appreciated.
Thanks

Not sure how sustainable they would be in a pot, but a good 'screen' generally is Pyracantha.

They're pretty resilient, evergreen, have lovely small white flowers in June and are covered in berries later. You can also cut them back pretty hard if need be so you don't have to allow them to get massive if you don't want them to, (though they flower on old wood so frequent heavy pruning reduces flowering/berries). Also while you don't mention security, their thorns are vicious even if you're expecting them, so good luck if someone randomly decided to go through it. They're also pretty popular with the birds around here at least.

I think the problem would be that whilst you might be able to grow screening plants in containers, I don't know if they'd be able to get big enough or dense enough to be effective due to the limitations the container puts on their growth (though someone more experienced can probably answer that better).

  • Amelanchier alnifolia 'Obelisk' is ideal for a large container. It's a small, upright, tree that bears lovely white Spring blossom followed by Summer berries and has good Autumn colour too.

Thank you 😊... I've just had a look  on rhs website and  it looks really interesting. I like the fact, that it flowers and also goes through so many colour changes throughout a year and have berries... Great, birds will probably love it. Thanks again.

Thank you for suggestions. I'm looking for something with year interest. It will be close to a walkway so thorns might be too much, birds would love it though.

Bamboo will grow large pots.  You will have it there all winter as well.
