Sunflower heads and birds

Hello I have lots of sunflowers going strong but a few looking a bit raggy- I think I read I could remove the petals but should leave the heads and they will attract birds - is this right? or do I need to cut them and prepare the heads in some way or lie them flat on a bird table or something? Thanks in advance

You can scrape the seeds out of the head and use it in seed feeders, just don't put the heads near the ground that way would encourage rats.

I've always found the heads start to go mouldy if I leave the seeds in there to dry. Maybe it's just me and how damp it is here in the Autumn but once the seeds are ripe I always scrape them out and dry them as quickly as I can then feed them to the birds as loose seed.
