Fuchsia hawkshead

Ive bought this perennial fuchsia but the stems aren't woody yet.

Apart from at the very base.
I'm a bit concerned about leaving it out this winter. What do you think?

  • I have one very similar and mine will definitely spend its first winter in the greenhouse. But my garden is at over 1300ft in in the cold, wet and windy Pennines and it can easily go down to minus 12C. Where you are you will probably get away with it if you tuck it in a sheltered corner, preferably in the ground with a good layer of mulch. The foliage will die back but it should resprout from the base in spring. You could always try a cutting or two first, fuschias usually root quite easily :)

I think I'll leave it in the porch this year. It looks to me as if it might have been forced a bit. Good luck with yours @Buttercupdays 😊
I didnt know you could get pure white fuchsias.

Hawkshead is one I always wanted, but at the time, couldn't get.
They're exceptionally tough, and the very pale pink one I did buy coped more than easily with our climate here,  but I think you're right - that looks very soft.
I'd agree with @Buttercupdays - somewhere sheltered should be adequate where you are  @B3. It'll be fine by spring to go out in the ground.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

That's very kind @B3 - but I'm not sure I have anywhere to put one now!  :D
