It has never flowered, to my knowledge, though I wouldn't always have noticed as it's been a bit buried in a dark corner that I'm currently clearing.

No not Escallonia.
it is one of the many evergreen Euonymus.

I thought it looked like Euonymous by the leaves, too.

Oh really? Thank you - I've definitely got a blind spot when it comes to Euonymous (apart from the ubiquitous Emerald 'n' Gold / Emerald Gaiety). I will look further.
