White marks covering plant

Hi there.  I am very much a novice in terms of gardening and recently I noticed these white marks all over a plant I have.  It seems to be having a negative effect, was just wondering if anyone knew the cause?  Many thanks

Is it an indoor plant? I had whitefly on a houseplant once and they looked like that (although not so many).

That’s not whitefly ... it’s scale insects. 100% certain 😊

I agree with Dovefromabove, they are Euonymus Scale, and the plant looks like a Euonymus Japonicus, an outdoor shrub.

It should be refereed to as "Euonymus scale"
 It is very specialised ..it is a small sap-sucking insect that infests the stems and foliage of Euonymus.

It is nothing like the Scale insect that can affect other plants.

I am in no way doubting your correct answer..do not get me wrong.
But you have twice call it scale when it is Euonymus scale.
There is a world of difference...that was all.

@Silver surfer If you checked the link then you will have seen that I linked to Euonymus Scale ... the RHS describes it as one of the ‘many types of scale insects’ not that much of a ‘world of difference’ 😉 It does look very like Euonymus Scale but I hesitated to give a 100% definitive ID from that photo ... an ‘informed suggestion’ maybe. 😊
