Patchy hedges

Hi everyone,

My parents hedges are looking a little worse for wear, possibly as a result of being over-trimmed over the last couple of years. As you can see from the images there are some big bare patches that have started to appear.

Could this just be trauma and they need to be left a while to grow back or are they at the point of no return?

Any help on how to bring these back to life would be greatly appreciated.

David 😎

"hedges" is vague... what type of plants are they made of?

  • I believe it's a Privet (Ligustrum Vulgare).

It might be an idea to stop trimming the hedge for a while. There appear to be new shoots coming from some of the bare stems. I also see some ivy and it would be a good idea to rip that out as it will take over every bare space and the privet will have no chance of recovery.
  • Thanks Ceres. Definitely going to leave it be then and strip away as much of that ivy as possible!
