Plum tree(s)

Hi all, I inherited a mature plum tree (or two) which are planted close together.

It was neglected and straggling up to 12+Feet with no fruit so last August I cut a third of the very high canopy and this year cut a little more but there were some small tears right up top.

I have two issues or questions.

1.  There is a load of stuff suckering from the base and I don’t know if it’s part of the tree or something else?  what should/can i do about this?

2. It produced fruit this year but we were too busy to harvest so much of it rotted on the branches.  However some leaves look big and floppy.

pics below... any help appreciated :-)

Whatever is growing round the base of your plum tree, it ain’t a plum.😁
