My daughter has that problem in Cornwall, she can’t go out with the kids on bin days the seagull are vicious.

Interesting idea.  I'd love to see how they would implement it here when they charge for garden waste collection and there is no garden waste collection for a month over Christmas and New Year.

They charge here as well, we don’t use it, I never have a scrap of food waste but for those who do it’s collected and used to make power in Cornwall.

We used to have a garden waste collection only through the main season, but they changed that quite a long time ago, and carried it on through winter. I think it was only once a month at that point, and we had a small, separate container for household food waste which was on a rota with everything else.
Once it changed to putting it in with garden waste, and we had bins for all the other stuff, they've been collecting the garden waste every week.

We put our food and garden waste in the same bin, and it's emptied every week. I don't yet have my own compost bin so it's very handy. No problems with smells etc. The council did consider introducing a charge last year but councillors voted against it. We also have food waste caddies for people who don't want/need/have space for a wheelie bin, the caddies get emptied into the same lorry as the bins.

On the other hand, my mum in a different area has to pay for her garden waste to be collected. Even though she pays (well, she pays half, sharing a bin with the next door neighbour), the bin is only emptied once a fortnight during the summer, and not at all during the winter. She can't recycle food waste at all, it goes in the black bin. Just shows how it differs between areas - despite paying, she's getting a much worse service than I get for free.

What do you do with egg shells, potato peelings, chicken bones and avocado stones? Eat them?

Lyn composts them @glasgowdan. Not sure if she eats many avocados  ;)
You're right @AndyR - it needs to be consistent for people to recycle, and be confident about it too.
You'd think by now, these councils could have a more concerted effort, although a lot of it is down to their facilities for recycling etc. Some will have a bigger drain on resources than others too.
