I often wonder when it’s the “right” time to prune photinias - but went for July 22nd this year and must admit I’m very pleased with the way it’s looking today ... hope you like it too ...
A lovely plant there. Did you have ‘flowers’ on it this year? Mine gave the best display ever this year - must have been just the right conditions, or that I didn’t prune the height.
I love photinias - so maybe I give them a bit more tlc than is actually needed ...... when we moved here nine years ago this specimen was a large, scruffy bush with no particular shape and dull, brownish leaves (a lot of them on the floor). I cut all the lower branches off and made it in to a tree. I give it a bucket of water once a week to help ensure it doesn’t drop too many leaves. About three times a year I prune all the branches, using secateurs. Then, when all the new batch of beautiful red leaves have lost their colour I do it again! No, I don’t get any flowers and I realise lots of people might think this stupid - but I’m perfectly happy to just enjoy the stunning red leaves instead.
Wow! Quite impressive, Hexagon .... yes, the July prune will be the last one - but once the leaves lose their colour again I’m bound to find a few sticking-up bits that just have to be cut off ...
That's how most of them look up here, after people get fed up of them looking dreadful. The only decent one I've seen is actually right across the front from me. Against the house wall so it gets protection and sun, but also gets rain. He just prunes it now and again to keep the colour. I don't think anyone grows it for flowers - only the foliage.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
@Fairygirl. it was just outside one of the sitting room windows and was starting to wave about in my eye line from my chair and it annoyed me, so out it came.
