Best Varieties/Yields for a Small Space

I thought we could start a thread on what crops best for you in a small space. I'll add  some photos of my successes when I get a chance. I have a mixture of containers and a small slug ridden bed and would love any tips. I'm trying to grow through more of the year as one strategy, so have black radishes, chard and round carrots in the old potato pots.

  • Pea shoots grown from dried marrowfat peas grow a good amount of salad quickly
  • Trained fruit trees! (I know they need pruning)

I don't grow a lot of food crops, but I used to grow mange tout in among ornamentals in a previous garden, so I got some to grow in pots this year. Six plants, germinated in small pots undercover, and planted out into their final 15 inch pots [ 3 in each] and a good crop from them. Don't take up a lot of space, and they flower and crop pretty quickly. I've frozen a bundle too.  I don't have any pix, but they were easy to grow, and a few plants would give a decent harvest.
I grow salad leaves in pots/troughs too - mainly as cut and come again, and when they're a bit past it,  I plant those out in gaps in the borders while the next lot are growing and taking over.  I repeat that a couple of times through the year. I like the red leaved varieties, and they look quite pretty among ornamentals. :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
