Dividing potted astrantia

I’ve bought a large astrantia that’s blooming quite beautifully. Will I have to remove all the flowers if I want to divide it in two? Is there a way to take astrantia cuttings? Greedy, I know... 😞

  • I find they seed very prolifically, so by next year you could have any number of plants without the need to split your lovely plant or remove the flowers.

I divided one last autumn and I though I'd killed it because spring came and nothing showed, then suddenly they all popped up. They are flowering, too!

I’ve never split one and I wouldn’t think you could take cuttings. It will be dying right down soon, but if you save the seeds you can sow some next year.
they are ready when they feel papery and fall off easily in your hand.

Thank you, all. I will simply let it seed itself, though I would have liked an identical one... I might try to remove a small bit with some root attached (Irishman style?) and see if that will grow.

You can divide Astrantia quite easily. Probably best to wait until it has finished flowering first.

Thank you, @Hazyb. I wanted both to divide and keep the flowers. 😳 Will divide them in spring maybe.
