Are these suckers?

Good morning everyone.  Are these suckers on my patio rose?  Sorry it’s not very clear but I’ve tried to point the red arrows to them - they’re the paler green stems and are growing at a much faster rate than the rest of the rose.  If they are, I assume they have to be removed?  Sorry, but I’m new to roses and still learning 😀 Thanks in advance.

A close up of the leaves would assist.  I  take it that the rose has been grafted rather than grown from a cutting? If grafted it is planted rather deeply and that will encourage the growth of suckers but don't cut them out until they have been identified.

Thank you Joy.  I know nothing of the rose’s beginnings. Just bought from a nursery and potted it up with a rose fertiliser.  These are the leaves.

...they don't look like suckers to me.. the foliage appears the same as the rest of the rose... always check the foliage... and if you can see buds forming on the top, then it's not a sucker..

Suckers don't have the bronze colouring either. They're often lighter coloured with some whitish bloom on them (not mildew but the kind of effect you get on grapes). Given some nice weather,  those healthy new shoots should flower in a few weeks. As Malorena, the real rose expert says, suckers frequently have 7 leaflets as opposed to the 5 of a variety.
  • @Marlorena and @Joy* Thank you so much.  Although I’m a complete novice with roses I thought I would recognise a sucker so I am so glad I asked the question.  Does the fact that these shoots tower over the rest of the plant matter?... I know aesthetically it doesn’t look great but I don’t want to miss out on any blooms ... it’s the prettiest little rose, “Sweet memories”  which means a lot and it just blooms and blooms.  Thanks again both 😀

@Allyblueeyes … pretty little rose... just let those shoots flower as I expect they will have buds on the top,...  and after flowering cut them back towards the main framework that you have there, just to even it up a bit..  the rest of the plant will catch up in time... it grows to 2 foot or so..

...here's a photo showing the same canes growing outwards, not as tall as yours but this is typical..

@Marlorena your knowledge is amazing.  This has only been in the pot this Summer, would it be better in a bigger pot? x

@Allyblueeyes ..that's ok..  your rose is doing well, so the pot is alright for now, it seems suitable for a small rose like that... you will know when to repot as you will see signs of poor growth, yellowing leaves and generally an unhappy plant...
...just the sort of rose I would like for a small pot...  best wishes …
