Animals digging up garden

After living in my house for 25 years some animal is digging large holes in my garden borders. It is gradually destroying my lovely perennial beds. I noticed there was a pile of faeces in the latest hole. How can I stop them?

    Possibly badgers which are protected. You can't just 'do something to get rid of them' I'm afraid.

    Need more info, and some photos, to give more accurate advice  :)
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    If you can find where they're getting into the garden and block the access, they might go somewhere else.
