Pruning a Red Robin

I have a Red Robin tree, which is getting out of hand, it is approx 8 feet tall and spreading almost as wide.  I would like to know how best to prune it down a couple of feet (and reduce spread) and when is the best time to do so.

Ideally it's always best straight after flowering in June/July, but you can still prune them back now. If it it's very overgrown, and you want to get it back to a manageable size, prune 1/3 of branches hard back almost to the main trunk. The remaining branches, just shorten them by 2-3 feet. If it is growing strongly now, it should recover quite soon.
