Grass clippings in flower beds.

I'm just looking for a little advice involving putting grass clippings in flower beds.

My query is do grass clippings take root if you put fresh clippings on top of the soil in a flower bed I understand they do if you cultivate them into the soil but do they if you just lay them on top, or do they have to be fully dried out before doing so?

    Hi Lukejw,
Grass clippings will not take root though you might get some grass growing if there are seeds from grass flowers amongst the clippings.

I don't think grass clippings would root , it'd only be if there were seeds in there.

They don't usually look very attractive and if the layer is very deep it can smother seedlings and young plants. If you have a bit of space, a compost bin is a better option. The brown, crumbly compost looks good and improves the soil.
