Stupid Question: Where does all the compost go?

B3B3 Posts: 24,434
I've had to top up the compost in my tomato containers a couple of times now.
Where does it go?
Does it wash away, get compacted or do the tomatoes 'eat' it?

Thanks @Obelixx + @philippa smith2 I suppose the small annuals and the like don't have such big appetites as tomatoes and dahlias 😋

MPC turns to dust so the smaller the particles the less room they take up.

    It isn't a stupid question.

The stuff a plant is made from comes from somewhere - conservation of mass and all that. Some part of it is carbon taken out of the air, but a lot of it is minerals out of the soil. So the plants do 'eat' some of it.
