You can prune it back to a permanent woody framework each year. You can go right down to the base if you want, or keep a bit more height.     Paniculatas are lovely! Thank you Will. Ferns are a great idea too. One of the few plants I have managed to not only keep alive but at one point revivie! I have messaged the team and they have confirmed they will order the plants. Thanks everyone! I'll add a photo once it's all done.
