I discovered a large active ant nest in my plastic compost bin today....with only minimal disturbance the ants became very angry.....advice needed as to what to do? Its impossible to use the bin.

    Tip a bucket of water in there. Ants like it dry and ants in a compost heap indicates that it’s not moist enough ... they’ll move on if you keep it damp.

    And boiling water is even better.

    Why kill them when you can just move them on ... they’re good for other wildlife and an important part of the ecosystem.

    With over 20,000 species of ant on the planet and one of the most successful ever , you've really got to admire these little creatures .

    Please don't put boiling water on them :( We have ants in our garden and although they haven't caused any issues yet I will now be careful not to anger them.
