Apple tree problems

Hi everyone
I have 3 apple trees that have all been successful to varying degrees. However one now has some issues and I'm not sure how to deal with it and would like some advice please.

It's an established tree and has been relatively ok up to now. I noticed that the bark is peeling and some branches including, part of the main trunk, look dead. I have attached some photos.

I have looked up books & Google but can only see canker. Is this what's wrong? I wasn't sure it looked the same.

Any advice on how to help the tree would be appreciated.
Many thanks.

I can’t see any photos for some reason, but from your description of peeling bark and dead branches it sounds like canker.

There are various websites that show people instructing you on how to treat canker, but in my experience (I have tried their methods and gradually lost three trees to it) you are on a hiding to nothing.

Better to accept your fate, dig it up and buy a more resistant variety.

In future, knowing that canker is about, keep your secateurs spotlessly clean and clean them between pruning different trees.
Apophthegm -  a big word for a small thought.
