What is on my tree? Planted 3 years ago. Tree is a Hornbeam.

    I can see you have a liverwort growing on it, but photo comes out very dark on my screen so can’t quite see if the round shapes are fruiting bodies of the liverwort or something else. 
  • here's another picture - different area of tree - the spheres are about the size of the ball in a ballpoint pen nib ...

    Judging by the positioning, I suspect those are either young woolly aphids (which are black until they cover themselves with white 'wax'), or eggs of the same, assuming they rub-off easily.  The green crusty-looking stuff in the first photo is just lichen and is harmless.
    A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
