Weedkiller got onto my tomato plants but some still producing fruit, are they still safe to eat

TobykeaneTobykeane Posts: 42
I recently used some weedkiller on some stubborn weeds in the garden not to far from my tomatoes and unfortunately it seems like some of it got on the wind and attacked my tomatoes leaving the leaves and fruit branches curled up and gnarly. Some of its not too bad and some are even still producing fruit but they are an odd shape! Is it still ok to let them mature and eat them? Thanks

    Hi @Tobykeane,

I wouldn't eat anything from them .... I'd bin the lot.
    Just not worth the risk.

I just would have thought once it has done its thing it would have become all used up so would have been ok. Funny thing is that not all the tomatoes in the same area have been affected... just seems such a shame!
  • most weed killers are systemic so gets absorbed by the whole plant ,no telling what trace elements are in the fruit so would not eat anything.

Just out of interest what weeds were you trying to kill that needed weed killer?

i was laying down new grass seed to cover up some rough ground. dandelions, annual mercury, some other deep root weed, bind weed thistles.

The main ingredient is glysophate so should be ok I would have thought...

I have just double checked and its not glysophate but 1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2h)-one sodium salt. It was Resolva Pro weedkiller from Westland and I found a number for their customer services dept and gave them a call and they told me it doesn't stay in the plant for very long and fruit will be totally safe to eat. I mean gotta take that with a pinch of salt but sounded fine to me. It would only have been a very minimal amount that would have contacted the leaves anyway and that was way before the flowers had even started appearing anyways.

I'll let you know if my toes fall off!

Or if you get something nasty way down the line ... I really hope you don’t ... but I wouldn’t risk it ... and I’m someone who grew up on a farm when weed killers and pesticides were being applied with carefree abandon ...

But of course it’s up to you ... but what about anyone else who may eat your tomatoes ... will you be telling them so they can make an informed choice?

Not being difficult but I wouldn’t be happy if you fed me a cheese and tomato sarnie and then I found out later that the tomatoes could be contaminated.

Just saying ... not wanting to cause offence ...

Don't you wonder why the fruit is an odd shape?

I wouldn't be eating any of those  :/

Don't forget, it's in the makers' interest to tell you the product's fine, and the fruit is safe to eat.
    Your choice though.
