Privet hedge appears to be dying in various patches?

Hi all,
Im getting a bit concerned for the privet hedge at the front of our house, it appears to be dying/unhealthy in various places and it appears to be spreading.
What could be the cause? And has anyone any recommendations on cures, or what I could do to help it please?
I hope the photos show it clearly.
Thanks in advance.

From many previous posts, this seems to be happening across the country and the cause is still unknown. Best guesses are, simply old age, honey fungus or last year's long heatwave/lack of rain.  Personally I don't think there is much you can do to stop it. I'm just going to cut the dead bits out of my hedge, erect a trellis to fill the gap temporarily and hope the branches from each side can be persuaded to grow towards each other to fill the gap.  If it is honey fungus, there is no point in planting new privet in the gap. Sorry, not what you wanted to hear I expect.
