We'll all be moaning about a hot dry spell in the summer.  It’s what we do.

River, reservoir levels and ground water in England are doing well this winter. It should put us in a good position this summer coming, as long as the spring is not dry. (Other countries have their own monitoring services).

Regions that keep risking drought recently (in Ireland and the north of England) should now be looking at how to better store their water resources. The south and east seem to have less problems because they are historically used to have high human water usage and low rainfall.

There is no point in wailing and moaning about hose pipe bans in the middle of a hot summer. It's good to consider water usage and storage, (river abstraction/health) across the year. The challenge is to adapt national water infrastructure until it's fit for purpose, and keep the profile of these projects high, even when drought isn't in the news.
