Root/weed identification

We have started to garden and found an invasive root - masses of very long roots - over a meter long. Currently we haven’t managed to find a leaf at the end, so tricky to identify. My husband thought it was couch grass but that looks whiter and shorter. These look orange but might be as soil is sandy. If you pull the root apart, it has an outer sheaf with a stringy inner. Any ideas?

They look to me like tree roots ... any large trees around?
