Kept some dahlia bulbs from last year, some have come up,but two have not,the tuba has enlarged, but nothing coming up, any reasons for this, could it have been planted to late etc. Thanks
These Dhalia tubers, only got bigger, with some root growth but no stalk, is it worth keeping them for next year or does it mean they are blind, they were in pots. Lyn did you mean it should have a stalk on it already when planted.
The tubers (not bulbs) need to have an "eye" to grow a shoot from (usually they're near the previous year's old stalks). Sections of tuber with no eyes won't grow any shoots.

No stalk = no dahlia. The tubers are just nutrient storage receptacles, they will swell in the ground but there is nowhere (no stalk with embryonic bud lurking) for it to put this energy so I think that’s right, they will be blind and deaf to your ministrations... I don’t think they can spontaneously grow a stalk??

And I will try and buy decent tubers next year instead of relying on supermarket stock! Grew on a lovely orange one called Colour Spectacle, its been really slow to flower, ways behind all the others. Its finally flowered and its not that one at all - its dusky pink!
