I have nine plants that have appeared from nowhere.  I have been told that they are

'Tree Dahlias'.  I did plant some dahlia corms/tubers last year but none where this variety.  How have so many suddenly taken up residence? They are quite attractive really and vary in height from 4 to 6 feet tall and all are flowering. My problem now is what do I do when they have finished flowering?  Should I 'dig up and ditch' or just wait and see what happens next year?  Will this invasion go on.  The 'Day of the Triffids' comes to mind!  Many thanks.Type your message

Now that's an idea. I will try to sort one or two out.

They sound more like the Giant dahlias rather than tree dahlias (Dahlia imperialis).  Tree dahlias rarely flower in the UK.  ( I am assuming you are in UK, if not please tell us where you are. ) As Obelixx says, a photo would help.  Use the icon in the tool bar with the sun and mountains. (fifth from the right)

Back after prolonged absence..... My plants turned out to be Himalyan Balsam. They didn't fare well on investigation so they were removed and destroyed. Hopefully never to return. A belated thank you for all you advice.

Ah- if we'd had a photo, it would have been IDd right away for you @BryanC.
They're a hideous blight on the countryside.
Hope you've got them out successfully, but they're tenacious, so keep an eye on the areas they were in, as well as round about, as the seeds go for miles.

Hi there FG. After the horror stories I was told I got rid of them very quickly. In future I will get one of the numerous cameras out and get things sorted much quicker! Ta again.
