But this year, phew, fantastic, healthy and very early crop, delicious:

Thanks both, yes it’s always good when things turn out well. Despite careful cultivation,  weather patterns lately means its a lottery what works and what doesn’t these days. Sweetcorn obviously likes heatwaves and heavy storms, probably thinks it’s in South America :D

I thought I was seeing things until I saw you were in Spain. Mine is only a foot high.

Still over a month early here though. The smutty snap was from 11th August.

I’m no fan of sweetcorn but I like the rustic plate!

It is a thing, smutty balls.

I managed to crack one of said rustic plates but the shop have discontinued them, don’t you just hate that when that happens?

I think smutty balls are worse than a long felt want but not as bad as a red felt tip. Innuendo - an Italian suppository.

Last year my sweatcorn produced many 'smutty ball's too.
Thought it was me who had waited longer than usual to plant out because of the weather.
Now  to see that even in Spain you had the same  problems  is  telling me that I wasn't alone .
Hopefully this year will be different for us all.
But on inspection of mine it is noticeable that they are not growing quick as usual.
