Honeysuckle struggling

RoddersUKRoddersUK Posts: 455
I planted some honeysuckle in some pots last year. Seemed to be growing well, but recently they look like they are dying, I can only see one flower bud. Is it not possible to grow them in pots? I wanted something climbing and for wildlife. Do I need to change or can I bring them around?

I think you have answered your question. Honeysuckle will not thrive in a small pot.
If possible can you plant into the ground but not right against the fence.

Might be time to shift them on. I was hoping as they were not massive ones, 3m growth, I'd get away with it.

Any climbing alternatives I could put there? I used to grow sweat peas, but as its a hot corner, last year they suffered. Summers are not getting any cooler

Concurring with the majority of shrubs/ trees / climbers ,what grows above the ground is normally replicated below the ground .
I think your Honeysuckles would be better planted out of the pots and given a frequent soaking .
Rather than 'move them on ' , you could lose the obelisks and train them against your fence .

Morning Glories will take a lot of abuse. I have had lots of luck growing them through the very hot summers here in 11" baskets.

    Hello HouseFinch
Morning Glories in the UK normally refers to the annual climber Ipomoea ; Honeysuckle comes under Lonicera .
A classic case of the preferential use of botanical names .

I'd grown them up the obelisk then along the fence. They were looking good.
There's a nice place outside my garden where I can grow them up some trees. There's actually one there already I just seen.
So I should still get to enjoy them!

Sorry, should have quoted RoddersUK 'Any climbing alternatives I could put there?' before the suggestion. I am aware of the difference :)

Containers can be used OK.  Perhaps with container growing, more than the usual attention is needed regarding watering and feeding.  A container grown plant will simply grow to the size of the container.

It must be realised and accepted that, 'Lonicera' (Honeysuckle) belongs in part to group of plants that simply, 'take off.'  Example.  most Lonicera planted by a fence/trellis.  Will race away to the top of the trellis and under their own wheight and mass, form a massive what have you.  Sadly from soil level to the top brake, is bare.  Not a pretty sight.  So if your plant has already raced away.  Cut it back, well back.  Encourage new growth closer to ground zero, then continue to check it's growth.  Tie laterals to the trellis and keep them under control also.
