Melianthus major question.

Hi
Can anyone advise me why my melianthus is looking a bit sad, the leaves seem to drop off at the base of the shrub ?, maybe not enough shade...or water..??
Any ideas..

    The leaves always fall off at the bottom, well, mine always do.
    IMHO it's not the best plant to keep in a pot, much better in the ground.
