We usually put as many of our potted plants as possible in to the garden beds and then give the whole garden a proper drink.  Those that must stay in their pots, we put together in a shady part of the garden, on top of several layers of soaked newspapers, and give them a proper drink.  We find that they survive ok.  But, we leave small pots with the neighbours!
