Sounds like your cherry tree is way to young to consider pruning - https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/grow-your-own/fruit/cherries has best advice. I've got two 4 year old trees and only lightly pruned in spring and I probably won't do it again till next year.

Here's my crop of Morello Cherry's which I just picked this evening. This is from a tree that I rescued two years ago. It needed a severe prune but that was fine as I needed the roots to regenerate. It's done fantastic this year

the time to prune cherries is in summer - while it still has leaves so now is still ok. It does sound like it's your first year with it. If it was purchased this year then no pruning will be needed this year.

Otherwise follow this video which taught me how to do it easily:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tADEOd64Gmk
