Hi , im relatively new to gardening but few years ago bought a rose which was thorn free. It now seems to have thorns!!?? Is this usual?

What are the flowers like on the thorny bits? It is possible that the growth with thorns is from the rootstock which will if left, produce wild roses like the ones you see in hedgerows.
