Anyone know what this is?

This shrubby thing is growing in my garden (rented). It’s pretty enough and fills a space but I’m not sure what it is. At first I thought maybe some kind of cherry, but it doesn’t fruit (so far as I know) and it has weird sort of catkins. It also smells strange if you crush the leaves/prune it - sort of burnt/acrid? Any suggestions welcome!

It looks like a Viburnum bodnantense.  I think the "catkin" thing is a dead flower head.

I agree ... Viburnum bodnantense ... flowers in the winter ... gorgeous scent 😊

Awesome thank you! I’ll look out for flowers in the (actual) winter. (As opposed to this dress rehearsal we’re currently having!)
