Overgrown gardens

Hello!

My husband and I bought our first house last fall and I have no experience gardening. There is so much garden space and it’s all overgrown (and very overwhelming)! There are flower beds lining the entire perimeter of the house and most were overtaken by hostas and Day Lillie’s. 😅 Last fall we dug up so many hostas and luckily the only ones that came back were the ones we left alone. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by all the perennials that have popped up this spring but there are also so many day Lillie’s with HUGE roots. I’ve attacked sections at a time, leaving the perennials and pulling weeds out at the roots but there is so much to do. There are also sections that have the black weed tarp and then were covered in mulch but now there’s so many weeds over the mulch. I don’t even know how to go about that. Rake all the mulch and weeds out and start over? I almost want to use rocks in some areas because it’s just too much flower bed space for me to handle. But there’s also beautiful perennials in those areas. I don’t know if rocks can go around those or if I should move them. And if I wanted to do rocks, do I need to lay something down underneath them first? Help 😂

You would need to advise us which part of the USA you are in as well. There are many different areas.  Hostas and daylilies are fairly easy ground cover plants. I would just put mulch in between them and let them get on with it, unless you don't like them.

Weed membrane is a nuisance on ground that contains plants. It's only good for non planted areas such as gravel. Pull it all up and bin it.

Get the weedkiller out and clear areas where you want to start from scratch.
  • I live in Wisconsin, USA. I took some pictures of what it currently looks like and there’s also a picture of all the hostas in front of our house when we bought it. I’m sorry but there were way too many hostas for my liking. 😁
